Frequently Asked Questions
What is MakerWise?
MakerWise is an independent guide to laser engravers and hobby CNC machines: which laser type fits your materials, what a full CNC setup costs, which software and bits to use, and safe starting settings. Read more on the About page.
Does MakerWise test the machines it compares?
No. We compare published manufacturer specifications, manufacturer settings libraries, tooling charts, owner-forum consensus and checked prices, and every page says so. We never present research as hands-on testing.
Which watt figure does MakerWise use for diode lasers?
Optical output power, the power that actually reaches the material. Many listings print the electrical input instead (an "80 W" machine is often a 10 W optical module), so we convert or flag it every time.
Where do the settings in the calculator come from?
From published manufacturer and dealer settings charts for lasers and from a tooling maker chipload chart for CNC routers. Each reference row is listed on the settings calculator page with its source and date, and every result is a starting point for a test grid.
Are prices on MakerWise current?
Every price is a US price stamped with the month and year we checked it. Prices outside the US differ, and bundles change often, so confirm on the seller page before buying.
How does MakerWise make money?
Right now it does not: no links on this site are affiliate links. If that changes, the programs will be named in the affiliate disclosure, and commissions will never decide a recommendation.
Can I request a topic or send a correction?
Yes. Corrections with a source are checked and fixed with a new date, and topic requests shape the publishing queue. Reach us through the About page.
