Laser Engraver for Wood: Power, Cut Depth, and Wood Types
How thick each wood laser cuts in one pass, by optical watts and wood type (maker specs, Oct 2026), which woods engrave best, and why air assist matters.

A laser engraver for wood is a diode or CO2 laser that burns a design into the surface or cuts clean through thin boards, using a focused beam instead of a blade. Wood is the easiest material for both laser types, so the buying question is less “will it work” than “how thick, how fast, and on which species”.
We did not run cutting tests. The numbers below come from the makers’ own spec pages and stores, checked in October 2026, and every one is a best-case figure on clean, flat stock. Real cuts in knotty or glue-heavy wood come out slower.
Which laser engraver is best for wood?
For most people working in wood, the answer is a 20 W enclosed diode laser: it engraves every common species, cuts 6 to 10 mm stock in one pass, and keeps the beam inside a Class 1 box. Move to 40 W for thicker cuts, and to a CO2 laser only when cutting thick wood is your daily job.
| Machine | Laser and optical power | Enclosure | Work area | US price, Oct 2026 | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Creality Falcon A1 Pro | 20 W blue diode (455 nm) | Enclosed, Class 1 (FDA) | 358 x 268 mm | $1,099 | Engraving plus 3 to 10 mm cuts at home |
| xTool S1 40 W | 40 W blue diode | Enclosed, Class 1 | 498 x 319 to 330 mm by module | $1,699 (Basic Bundle) | Thicker cuts without a CO2 tube |

How thick can a laser cut wood, by watts?
One-pass cut depth scales with optical power, and the makers publish it. The table collects the one-pass maximums each maker lists on its product page.
| Machine and power | Basswood or basswood plywood | Hardwood (as listed) | Black acrylic |
|---|---|---|---|
| xTool S1 10 W | 6 mm plywood | 6 mm cherry | not listed |
| Creality Falcon A1 Pro 20 W | 10 mm basswood | not listed | 8 mm |
| xTool S1 20 W | 10 mm plywood | 10 mm cherry, 10 mm walnut | 8 mm |
| xTool S1 40 W | 15 mm plywood | 18 mm cherry, 15 mm walnut | 15 mm |
| xTool P2S 55 W CO2 | 18 mm basswood | 18 mm black walnut | 20 mm (any color, including clear) |
Read these as ceilings. They assume a focused beam, air assist on, a slow speed, and stock without voids or knots. Creality’s open-frame Falcon2 40W page lists 20 mm cork in one pass but no wood figure, and OMTech’s Polar Lite spec sheet lists a 17 mm maximum material height, which is clearance, not cut depth.
How fast does each laser cut wood?
CO2 lasers cut wood two to five times faster than the diodes in the same maker’s lineup, because wood absorbs the 10,600 nm CO2 wavelength very efficiently. xTool publishes both: its 55 W P2S cuts 3 mm basswood at 35 mm/s, and its S1 diode does it at 15 mm/s (40 W), 7 mm/s (20 W) and 5 mm/s (10 W).
Here is what those speeds mean for a small batch of parts with 1 meter of total cut outline (our arithmetic from the published speeds, before acceleration and travel moves):
| Laser | Max one-pass speed, 3 mm basswood | Time for 1 m of cut |
|---|---|---|
| xTool P2S 55 W CO2 | 35 mm/s | about 29 seconds |
| xTool S1 40 W diode | 15 mm/s | about 67 seconds |
| xTool S1 20 W diode | 7 mm/s | about 2 minutes 23 seconds |
| xTool S1 10 W diode | 5 mm/s | about 3 minutes 20 seconds |
For one gift, the difference is a coffee break. It grows with batch size: 20 m of outline takes about 10 minutes on the P2S and about 48 minutes on a 20 W S1.
Which woods engrave best with a laser?
Light, even-grained woods give the most consistent contrast, because the burn shows dark against a pale surface and there is little difference between growth rings. Dark woods engrave well but show less contrast, and resinous softwoods burn unevenly.
| Wood | Engraving result | Cutting notes |
|---|---|---|
| Basswood and basswood plywood | Even, high contrast; the usual test material | Cuts cleanly; sold in laser-ready sheets (OMTech: 12 sheets of 12 x 8 in for $20.99) |
| Birch plywood | Good contrast on the face veneer | Glue layers and hidden voids can leave uncut tabs |
| Maple | High contrast, crisp detail | Dense; slower to cut than basswood |
| Cherry | Warm, medium contrast | xTool lists cherry as its thickest one-pass wood cut |
| Walnut | Low contrast, rich look | Cuts well; dark edges blend in |
| Pine and other softwoods | Uneven: soft earlywood burns deeper than latewood | Resin pockets can flare; watch closely |
| MDF | Flat, even, brown-gray | Cuts, but the binder makes heavy smoke and dark edges |
If you plan to sell what you make, the laser engraving ideas by material page lists which wood products suit which laser.
Why does air assist matter for cutting wood?
Air assist is a jet of compressed air aimed at the spot where the beam meets the wood. It blows smoke and burning debris out of the kerf, which gives cleaner edges, less charring on the surface, and fewer flare-ups that can become a fire.
Most enclosed wood lasers now include it: Creality lists built-in air assist on the Falcon A1 Pro, and OMTech ships the Polar Lite with an 18.8 cfm air pump. On an open-frame diode it is often an add-on, and it is the first upgrade worth buying if you cut more than 3 mm stock.
Air assist does not make a laser safe to leave. Wood cutting produces open flame in the kerf by design, so stay with the machine for the whole job and keep a suitable extinguisher next to it. The laser engraver safety guide covers fire, fumes and eyewear.
Should you cut plywood with a laser?
Yes, thin plywood is one of the most common laser materials, but thick plywood is a fire risk. xTool’s own P2S FAQ says to cut solid wood up to 18 mm but not plywood thicker than 12 mm, because thick plywood can catch fire during the cut.
Plywood also cuts less predictably than solid wood. Each glue layer absorbs energy differently from the veneer, and a void inside the sheet changes how fast the beam breaks through, so one corner of a part may stay attached while the rest drops free. Plywood sold for lasers, made with thin, consistent glue lines, reduces that variation.
What do “40W” and “80W” mean on a wood laser listing?
Diode laser power on a listing can mean optical output (the light that reaches the wood) or electrical input (what the machine draws). Only optical watts predict cut depth. Creality’s open-frame Falcon2 40W listing, for example, describes “the power of a 40W laser engraver with 120W machine capability”: 40 W is the light, 120 W is not.
Compare machines on optical watts only. A listing that leads with a large round number and buries the optical figure is usually quoting electrical input. To turn optical watts into a starting power and speed for your wood, use the laser and CNC settings calculator: pick your laser type, optical watts and wood, and it gives power, speed, passes and line interval with the reference chart it came from.
Laser or CNC router for wood signs?
A laser is better for fine detail, photos, thin stock and cut-out shapes with burned edges. A CNC router is better for deep carving, thick boards, V-carved lettering and edges with no char, at the cost of noise, dust and bits.
| Job | Laser | CNC router |
|---|---|---|
| Photo or fine-line engraving | Yes | Poor |
| Cutting 3 to 6 mm parts | Fast, burned edge | Slower, clean edge, needs tabs |
| Signs in 19 mm (3/4 in) boards | Engrave only | Carve, V-carve, cut out |
| Deep relief | No | Yes |
If carved signs are the goal, the CNC router guide explains how routers work and what to look for.
Who is a wood laser not for?
A desktop wood laser is not the right tool for production shops cutting 12 mm and thicker hardwood all day: even the fastest machines here list single-pass limits around 15 to 18 mm on clean stock, and thick cuts leave heavily charred edges.
It is also not for people who need to cut clear acrylic with a diode, mark bare metal without an add-on module, or run the machine unattended. Clear acrylic needs a CO2 laser, and bare metal needs fiber or a 1,064 nm module; the diode vs CO2 vs fiber comparison shows which type handles which material.

Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to what readers ask us most
What is the best laser engraver for wood?
For most home users, an enclosed 20 W diode such as the Creality Falcon A1 Pro ($1,099, October 2026): it engraves every common wood and cuts 10 mm basswood in one pass. Buy a 55 W CO2 such as the xTool P2S if you cut thick wood every day.
How thick of wood can a laser cut?
It depends on optical power. Maker specs list one-pass maximums of 10 mm basswood for 20 W diodes, 15 mm plywood and 18 mm cherry for the 40 W xTool S1, and 18 mm basswood for the 55 W xTool P2S CO2. These are best-case numbers on clean stock.
Is a diode or CO2 laser better for wood?
Both engrave wood well. CO2 cuts wood faster: xTool lists 35 mm/s through 3 mm basswood for the 55 W P2S against 15 mm/s for its 40 W diode S1. Diodes cost less and fit smaller rooms. Pick CO2 if cutting, not engraving, is your main job.
Can a 10 W laser cut wood?
Yes, thin wood. xTool lists 6 mm basswood plywood and 6 mm cherry in one pass for the 10 W version of its S1. Thicker stock needs several passes, and each pass widens the char on the edge.
What wood should you not laser?
Avoid wood with unknown coatings, and anything bonded with PVC or vinyl laminate, which releases chlorine compounds when lasered. Thick plywood is a fire risk: xTool advises against cutting plywood over 12 mm even on its 55 W CO2.
