CNC Plasma Table Buying Guide for Home Shops
CNC plasma tables for home shops: CrossFire prices and cut areas (Oct 2026), the plasma cutter, air and power you also need, water tables, and plasma vs laser.

A CNC plasma table is a computer-controlled gantry that moves a plasma torch over a steel sheet to cut parts from a drawing, such as brackets, signs and gussets. The table moves the torch; a separate plasma cutter makes the arc. Most buyers price the table and forget the cutter, the air supply and the wiring.
We did not cut on these machines. Prices, cut areas and specs come from Langmuir Systems’ store and product pages and Hypertherm’s spec page, checked October 6, 2026. Langmuir dominates the hobby price range, so this guide centers on its CrossFire family.
Which CNC plasma table should you buy for a home shop?
For most home shops, the choice is between Langmuir’s four CrossFire tables, and the right one follows the size of your parts. Buy the base CrossFire for brackets and small signs, the PRO for parts up to about 4 x 2.75 ft, the PRO MAX for 4 x 4 ft work, and the XR only if you cut full 4 x 8 ft sheets.
| Table | Cut area | Base price, Oct 2026 | Torch height | Water table | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CrossFire | 25 x 23 in (25 x 33 in with $150 XL kit) | $1,995 | Manual; Z-axis, IHS and THC kit $550 | Optional, $150 | Runs on a 120 V, 20 A outlet; ships in one 132 lb box |
| CrossFire PRO | 48.25 x 33.3 in | $3,195 | Powered Z with initial height sensing; THC ready | Built in, stainless | Reinforced steel frame |
| CrossFire PRO MAX | 48 x 48 in | $3,395 | Optional automatic THC | Built in, deeper pan | 300 ipm; plate up to 1 in thick |
| CrossFire XR | 4 x 8 ft | $6,995 | LS-THC included | Built in | Control PC, touchscreen and wireless pendant included; 400 ipm |
The base CrossFire lists a 300 ipm maximum cut speed, motion accuracy of 0.002 in per 12 in and 3/8 in, 4-start ACME lead screws. Langmuir adds $149 flat-rate shipping to the contiguous US for it.
What do the CrossFire packages include?
Langmuir sells each table bare or in packages that add torch height control, a touchscreen PC, limit switches and sometimes the plasma cutter. Packages cost less than the same parts bought one by one.
| Package | Price, Oct 2026 | What it adds to the table |
|---|---|---|
| CrossFire Basic | $2,495 | Z-axis with THC, 21.5 in touchscreen PC, X/Y limit switches, water table |
| CrossFire XL | $2,595 | Basic Package plus the XL kit (25.3 x 33.3 in) |
| CrossFire Advanced | $3,195 | Basic Package plus a Razorcut 45 plasma cutter with hand torch |
| CrossFire PRO Basic | $4,195 | Automatic THC, touchscreen PC, limit switches |
| CrossFire PRO Advanced | $4,795 | PRO Basic plus a Razorcut 45 with machine torch and torch mount |
| CrossFire PRO MAX Well-Equipped | $4,395 | Automatic THC, touchscreen PC, limit switches |
| CrossFire PRO MAX Razorcut 45 | $4,995 | Well-Equipped plus a Razorcut 45 with machine torch and torch mount |
| CrossFire XR Advanced | $7,795 | Razorcut 45 with machine torch and a remote e-stop |
| PRO MAX or XR with Powermax65 SYNC | $8,695 / $10,995 | Hypertherm’s 65 A cutter instead |
In our view, torch height control is the upgrade most worth paying for. It holds the torch at a steady height over warped or wavy sheet, which Langmuir says gives cleaner edges, less dross and longer consumable life.
What else do you need besides the table?
A CNC plasma table needs four more things before it cuts: a plasma cutter with a CNC port, clean dry compressed air, power for the cutter and compressor, and a computer with design software. Budget for consumables from day one.
- Plasma cutter. Langmuir lists cutters without a high-frequency start (blowback or similar) as compatible. Its own Razorcut 45 uses a low-frequency pilot arc start, which Langmuir says avoids the electrical interference that can disrupt CNC electronics.
- Compressed air. The cutter’s air demand sets the compressor size. Hypertherm specifies 6.7 scfm at 90 psi of clean, dry, oil-free air for the Powermax45 SYNC; an air dryer and filter keep water and oil out of the torch.
- Power. The CrossFire table runs on a single 120 V, 20 A outlet, and Langmuir notes the compressor and cutter need their own 120 or 240 V outlets. A licensed electrician installs any new 240 V circuit to code.
- Software and computer. Langmuir’s FireControl runs the table and works with Autodesk Fusion, which is free for personal, non-commercial use. A dedicated touchscreen PC kit costs $750, or use a Windows laptop.
- Consumables. A Razorweld 45 CNC consumables set (5 nozzles, 5 electrodes, swirl ring, retaining cap, shield) costs $160; Hypertherm SYNC cartridges cost $56 to $58 each.
Which plasma cutter should you pair with a CNC table?
Pick the plasma cutter by the thickest steel you cut regularly, not the thickest it can sever once. A 45 A cutter covers most hobby work in sheet and plate up to 1/2 in; step up to 65 A only for regular 5/8 in and thicker plate.
| Plasma cutter | Price at Langmuir, Oct 2026 | Rated cut | Input power | Air |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Razorweld Razorcut 45, hand torch | $995 | 1/2 in steel (Langmuir rating) | Single-phase inverter | Check the manual |
| Razorweld Razorcut 45, machine torch | $1,289 (or $1,365 with torch mount) | 1/2 in steel | Single-phase inverter | Check the manual |
| Hypertherm Powermax45 SYNC, machine torch | $3,449 with mount and CPC cable | 5/8 in recommended at 20 ipm; 1/2 in pierce | 200 to 240 V single-phase, 39/32 A | 6.7 scfm at 90 psi |
| Hypertherm Powermax65 SYNC, mechanized torch | $4,375 | Up to 3/4 in (Langmuir listing) | See Hypertherm manual | See Hypertherm manual |
Hypertherm also lists a 50% duty cycle at 45 A for the Powermax45 SYNC (100% at 32 A), so long cut files on thick plate run hotter than short jobs on sheet.
What does a complete hobby plasma setup cost?
A first working CrossFire setup costs about $3,355 before shipping, the compressor and wiring, and about $5,155 on a 4 x 4 ft PRO MAX package. These examples use Langmuir’s October 2026 package prices, which include the plasma cutter.
| Line item | Small table | 4 x 4 ft table |
|---|---|---|
| Table package | CrossFire Advanced Package, $3,195 | PRO MAX Razorcut 45 Package, $4,995 |
| Plasma cutter | Included (Razorcut 45, hand torch) | Included (Razorcut 45, machine torch) |
| Consumables set | $160 | $160 |
| Shipping | Check at checkout | Check at checkout |
| Subtotal | $3,355 plus shipping | $5,155 plus shipping |
| Still needed | Compressor and dryer, 240 V circuit, ventilation | Same |

Water table or downdraft table?
A water table holds water just under the slats, so the plasma blast splashes water onto the back of the part as it cuts. Langmuir says this cools the part, reduces warping, noise, smoke, dust and arc flash, and strongly recommends cooling for sheet thinner than 1/8 in.
A downdraft table instead pulls smoke down through the slats with a fan into a filter or out of the building. It keeps parts dry, but the fan system costs more and takes more space, so most hobby tables use water; every CrossFire either includes a water tray or offers one. The trade-off with water is upkeep: the tray collects sludge and slag that need cleaning out.
Should you cut steel with plasma, a fiber laser or a router?
For hobby budgets, plasma is the only practical way to cut steel plate. Fiber lasers that cut plate cost several times more, hobby fiber engravers only mark metal, and CNC routers are not built for steel.
| Method | Example and price, Oct 2026 | Steel plate cutting | Edge and detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| CNC plasma | CrossFire $1,995 plus a $995 to $3,449 cutter | Yes, set by the cutter (1/2 to 5/8 in at 45 A) | Wider kerf, some dross and bevel; fine detail is limited |
| Fiber laser cutter | Langmuir Apollo, $19,995 | Yes | Fine detail, narrow kerf |
| Fiber laser engraver (galvo) | OMTech 20W, $1,599.99 | No, marks and engraves | For serial numbers and logos; see the laser engraver for metal guide |
| CNC router | Hobby routers from $249 | No | Wood, plastics and light aluminum; see the CNC router guide |
For small, accurate aluminum parts rather than steel profiles, a desktop CNC mill is the better tool.
Is a CNC plasma table safe to use at home?
A CNC plasma table is safe in a home shop only with ventilation, fire precautions and eye protection, because plasma cutting throws sparks, makes metal fumes and emits intense arc light. Follow the plasma cutter’s manual for the lens shade, and keep combustibles well away from the table.
- Fumes. Cut in a ventilated garage or shop with the door open or an exhaust fan; a water table reduces, but does not remove, smoke. Coated or galvanized steel adds coating fumes, so check the coating’s safety data sheet.
- Fire. Sparks travel far beyond the table. Clear sawdust, rags and solvents, and keep an extinguisher within reach.
- Electrical. Any 240 V circuit is installed by a licensed electrician; the cutter and compressor are connected per their manuals.
Who is a CNC plasma table not for?
A CNC plasma table is not for apartments, shared walls, or a garage without ventilation and a clear area around the table. It also does not suit anyone without access to the power the cutter and compressor need.
It is the wrong machine for wood signs (use a CNC router or a laser), for fine jewelry-scale detail in thin metal (plasma kerf is too wide), and for marking finished parts (a fiber laser engraver does that). If you cut steel brackets, gussets and metal art from sheet, it is the most capable tool per dollar in a home shop. To join those parts afterward, our handheld laser welder guide compares laser welding with TIG and MIG.

Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to what readers ask us most
How much does a CNC plasma table cost?
Langmuir's CrossFire tables cost $1,995 to $6,995 in October 2026. With a plasma cutter and consumables, packages run from about $3,400 (CrossFire Advanced) to $8,000 (4 x 8 ft XR Advanced), before the compressor, dryer and any 240 V wiring.
What plasma cutter works with a CNC table?
One with a CNC port and a non-high-frequency start. Langmuir lists blowback or pilot-arc start cutters as compatible, such as the Razorweld Razorcut 45 ($995 to $1,365) and Hypertherm Powermax45 SYNC ($3,449 with machine torch and mount).
How thick can a hobby CNC plasma table cut?
The table is rarely the limit; the plasma cutter is. Langmuir rates the Razorweld 45 for 1/2 in steel, and Hypertherm lists 5/8 in as the recommended cut for the Powermax45 SYNC. The CrossFire frame supports plate up to 1 in.
Do you need a water table on a CNC plasma table?
Langmuir strongly recommends cooling for sheet under 1/8 in, because heat warps thin parts. Its water tray also cuts noise, smoke, dust and arc flash. The CrossFire water table costs $150; the PRO and PRO MAX have one built in.
Can I run a CNC plasma table in my garage?
Yes, if the garage is ventilated, has a non-combustible floor area around the table and the right power. The CrossFire itself runs on a 120 V, 20 A outlet, but most plasma cutters and compressors need their own 240 V circuits.
